Reckoning Prerelease Tournament Report
Date: April 8th
Location: Double Midnight Comics, Manchester, NH
Format: Draft
After a few small glitches in the beginning, the draft started out just a few minutes late. The numbers were perfect at 16 players and we split the draft groups into 2 sets of 8. While the official rules are posted to draft 2 cards at a time, the judge made the correct call and switched it to 1. Swiss format of 4 rounds. Below is the list of cards I drafted in deck and my feedback on each. I also included the cards not played and why.
Deck List
Character- Lady Phe’ Ronde (drafted)- ALLSTAR! Best card I drafted
Goblin Archers x1- 90% of the time just a 1/1 body
Warrior Recruiter x1- Good because of 3/2 groundpounder, not the recruiter ability
Knyles x1- Solid body with magic to boot, important that it was a wizard
Bookworm Bilkins x1- best part is the fact it was a wizard
Dwarven Carpenter x1- 2/1 builder….usually was 2/1 attacker
Earth Elemental x1- ALLSTAR! Only 2 wizards to cast but great with hatched dragons and Sworn Defender
Arrowcatcher x1- Never faced archers so didn’t have any effect…often just sat in hand
Sworn Defender x2- ALLSTAR! One in play is great, 2 in play is even better.
Green Hatchling x1- Solid card but worse of the 3 dragons I had
Blue Hatchling x1- Great card. 2/2 flyer but the awesome magic ability was the key
Red Hatchling x1- ALLSTAR! 50% of Character damage I did was by this card
Killer Monkeys x1- Never used special ability, 1/1 in every game
Shielded Spikedriver x3- 1/4 Wall w/hammers = Good
Nimble Monk x1- 2/1 Quickness is solid draft card
Graverobber x2- 2/2 with a good ability (although it never effected games)
Martyr x1- 1/1 ability never used
Hidden Trap x2- ALLSTAR! It was always a nice surprise!
Brainwash Blade x1- +1 power on Dragons is very nice, -5 loyalty nice extra
Dwarven Battlehammer x1- Bad call, should have been left out but played 2 times
Purify x2- Solid card, especially on growing dragons
Fireball x1- Removal is never bad, this is even better than Lightning Bolt IMHO
Onager x1- Only built 2x and used in one…it did win me the game I used it in
Illusionary Fighter x1- Solid control card
Cards drafted and not used
Simple Stone Wall, Large Wall, Mountain Spire, Lair, Fortress- No Trowels
Barricade- thought about fitting it in, didn’t make the cut
Dragon Slayer- would have brought in but never saw many dragons
Beacon to the Gods, Demolish, Heightened Awareness, Necromantic Plague, Anarchy, Brain Death, and Release of Power x3, Ego Boost- Limited magic so I tried to limit spells
Lady Phe’ Ronde, Glye Rivendale- Lady sooo good, defensive draft
Dwarven Smith- 15 loyalty>12 leadership nuff said
Fire Elemental- Only card I should have included and brought in second game on a mos occasions….if I had to do over, would have replaced Dwarven Battlehammer with this. I had limited wizards so thought I should only play with one of the elementals..good thought but should have included it over the hammer
Round one- Kevin-Character Lady McDonan
Wouldn’t you know that I traveled for 2.5 hours with the person that I end up playing in the first round. His deck was very defensive with field medic, Treant, and TWO Frost Sorcerers! The first game was close and very long. We had just started game 2 when time was called. The game was stalled and ended in a draw. Won match 1-0, Off to round 2
Round two- Joe-Character Lord Zycon
Joe’s deck was good and the first game he got a good jump on me. I eventually turned it around and took both games. I don’t remember any bomb cards in his deck, just that every card seemed good. Won match 2-0.
Round three- Chris- Character Grimus Gravorcious
Chris had some nasty, nasty cards. Game one he played 2 Mind Erasers and a Thought Devourer. I doubt I would have survived except that I was drawing 2 cards a turn. He cursed me with a card that turned all my cards into Zombies. It actually won me the game as the 4 Guardians I had allowed me to attack with enough for the win. Game 2 went better as he drew less of the nasty discard but a Freeze hurt. I ended up with the win just before time was called. Match 2-0 Finals here we come!
Round four-Matt (I think)?? Character Saintheah
After a discussion about intentional draws, we decided to play it out. First time I was facing the army of flyers. First game was going his way for quite some time but some timely kill led to several loyalty rolls that didn’t go his way. After watching a couple of angels abandon ship and doing some decent damage on the way, I swung over for a few points for the win. Game 2 went much quicker and he played some early angels that required some loyalty checks, which he lost. The game outcome was apparent and he conceded. The loyalty check roll outcomes reinforced my belief that putting the game on a 50/50 die roll is not a good thing. Match 2-0
Overall I thought the tournament went very well. All the players seemed to have a good time and there were no major problems. Every player I faced was very skilled and had a good knowledge of the game. I have only played Mystical Empire for a short time so the box of Reckoning and the box of first edition cards I purchased with my gift certificate dramatically increased my collection. I look forward to another tournament soon!
Big “Thank You” to Keith for running the show. Another to Double Midnight for hosting the event. I also wanted to give a big shout out to the gentleman that drove all the way from NY to join us (Ken maybe?). To all of the players, thanks for making the day a fun and enjoyable tournament!
