Can this spell be used to stop 'enters play' effects? For example, can I play this in response to my opponent playing a Fire Elemental to cancel its 'Deal 2 damage to each creature and player and 10 to structures when this creature enters play' effect? If so what is the speed of playing the creature: The character speed that is playing it, the creature being played's speed, or something else entirely?

This doesn't work because Purify will resolve before the creature enters play and the effect doesn't happen until the creature enters play.

That was actually a good question, though. I guess I never thought about that for this game. So when a creature does enter play, any enter play effect on that creature just happens without starting a new event...would that be correct?

You would be correct. Also, it doesn't remove RED text mechanics last time I checked. It only removes the ability text written plainly.

By the way, welcome to the forums, Zombie. I see you're already making good use of the forums. We're here to hang and help out if we can.
Can I ask where you are from? We'd like to get all parts of the country represented in these forums. Will you be going to GenCon this year for the MEGA Faceoff?
Let me know if I can help. Make yourself at home.

thanks, Q . I'm from central NY state, near Utica. I don't know of any other local ME players here, but I have traveled to NH for a couple of events. I get my cards in Albany.

Cool. NY in the house. Awesome. I like it when new states make the forums because it strengthens us all as players, and also the boards as a meeting place and a valid source of true ME gamers. Welcome to the party.
See ya around. Come check out some of the other boards. Let's leave poor Purify alone if we're not talking about it anymore. lol

Ok, so when it says 'abilities' It's talking about effects written out, not red 'mechanics.' Also if it the creature leaves play and returns (like entering and exiting a building or being restored by Wandering Cleric) does it regain it's abilities or are they still gone?

I can confirm that you are correct on the fact it removes written out effects, not the red "mechanics". It also does not remove magical abilities. When a card leaves play (removed from the game, enters a building, goes to the graveyard, reshuffles back into your resource pile,....I am sure there are more) any effects on them are removed. In this case, all abilities of the card Purify had targeted would return when it re-enters play.
