Things don't target unless the ability says "target" or a rule says they target. Attacking, for example, targets a Character or a structure by rule.
In the part about dealing damage when a Slave abandons, there's no targeting involved either by rule or in the card text.
It seems to me that there's almost no risk of Slaves abandoning now, since they only have 1 toughness. Anything that's going to injure a Slave will destroy it, thus preventing the Abandoning part from being an issue.

That is all true, but an Instigator would change that.
Oh well, the Brainwasher does not seem suited for Thandore. I would rather use the Whipmaster and get my rogues that have the invisible mechanic (since a mechanic is not an ability, and cannot be removed by the Whipmaster). Nothing meaner than an invisible builder.
