While I'm fairly certain a Creature skipping its next Loyalty Phase does not have to check for abandonment due to have a 0 Loyalty or Loyalty higher than the Character's Leadership, does this also mean it doesn't count at all towards total number of Creatures controlled during that Loyalty Phase?

This largely depends on the lingo in the rulebook. I would say that it wouldn't compensate for that, and that it still counts for creature totals. As I have been used to saying lately...Keith?
